Valentine’s Day Pop Up Card: Spiral Heart Tutorial

Valentine’s Day Pop Up Card: Spiral Heart Tutorial

Here is the tutorial on making the Valentine's Day Spiral Heart Pop Up Card:

  1. Purchase the template for this design here: Valentine's Day Pop Up Card: Spiral Heart.
  2. Print out the template.
  3. Cut the 2 spiral heart templates out and tape them to some cardstock.
  4. Chose 2 initials for the inside of the heart, and attach those templates to some cardstock.
  5. Using the templates, cut the pieces out starting from the center first.
  6. Cut a piece of backing cardstock 8.5″ x 6.25″.
  7. Score center crease at 4.25″ through the length.
  8. Attach spirals together using the opposing slits in the center of the spiral.
  9. Tape parts to your card backing to see how it opens.
  10. Make sure that the left heart spirals clockwise and the right heart spirals counter clockwise. This will maximize the spiral effect.
  11. Glue parts into backing.
  12. Glue “letters” into hearts.

Here's a tip: If you heart spirals are catching, try shaving some material off the bottom and tops of each “heart” in the spiral. This will give each heart more room to move.

You’ll have to be patient for that one. I’m working on the couples kissing card, which isn’t trivial either… 😉

I usually use 65lb card stock. you can buy that card stock at an office supply store like Staples. You can also use watercolor or bristol paper from an art store. Hope that helps!

This is an awesome site! I was thinking for this design, it is possible for you to provide the template for the number “2” and “1”. I want to make this card as a 21st birthday card for a dear friend. Many thanks!

Excellent pop-up heart, as soon as I saw it I had to make it.
It’s my 1st wedding Anniversary this weekend so it seemed appropriate. I’m lucky to work at a printers so could experiment with various types of card. In the end I used 190gsm (English weight) and laminated it to give it strength. I also modified it, hope you don’t mind. I made some panels without cut outs and put text and pictures on, still works well, everyone at work loved it, not sure about the wife yet!
Will try and post some pics on here. How do I do that?
    Thanks again,
look forward to trying more of your creations

You can cut the hearts out with scissors. You will cut the outside heart, but it is glued down so it will not be noticeable.

Hi Liew, You can print the template on any paper and use the template to cut through the cardstock of your choice. This way, you will not see any of the printing on your card. Here are some instructions on how to use your template.

Hi Rich – I just made this card and love it.

One of the things I’ve noticed when downloading, then printing your templates is the print is not dark even though I have plenty of ink in my printer. This particular template of “spiraling hearts” I noticed the ink was “red”, but it came out so light pink that I only noticed by accident. I looked at it through natural sunlight and could barely see the red/pink print ! I had to trace the template as best I could.

Is there someway that you can change your templates to all “BLACK” ink so that my printer can print it? I tried to do this myself on the print mode, but couldn’t find a place for me to click on so I could change it. Thanks again!

I’m using spiraling hearts for a wedding shower and/or for the actually wedding. Thanks Again!
