19 Dec Christmas Pop Up Card: Pyramid Tree Part 1
This year I have decided to make Christmas cards instead of buying them. The first step in making a card is to design it in my head. I've spent a few hours designing the card in my head while waiting for something or when I have time to kill. For example, I've thought about this card while stuck in traffic, traveling on a plane and even while sitting on the throne. Ok, maybe that last part was TMI. This makes me feel like I'm not wasting my time when waiting. The card I've designed is a pyramidal Christmas tree that folds down over a dog that is peeing on the tree's trunk.
The next step is to create the design in a 3D CAD software. The 3D CAD model will show what the card will look like fully assembled. This is where I'm at now. Here is what I hope the final design will look like:
The tree is created using the diagonal pyramid technique. I've removed out most of the inside of the tree except for some decorations. This allows the card holder to see the dog inside the tree. The dog is created using the 180 degree mountain technique where both sides of the dog are nearly identical and are placed equidistant from the center fold. I didn't bother modeling the folds for the dog's ear and his peeing leg. The 3D model shows a green tree and a brown dog. In reality, everything will be the same color and cut from the same cardstock. I like to creat designs with as little extra pieces that need to be glued. This design will use two sheets of cardstock: one for the pop up elements and one for the backing. The card will only need to be cut out and assembled with a few small areas for glue.
The next step is to design the layout of the card. Stay tuned for the next post.
